Evolutionary and Behavioural
Ecology. Conservation

Activities and Objectives
 Trumpeter Finch

Formed in 2000, our activities cover a scientific area that ranges on different biological organisational scales (individuals, populations, communities). Our main aim is to find out a coherent explanation for the observed biological diversity through the principles that the evolutionary theory provides. We try to get results that serve as the scientific basis for the solution of problems in conservation and management of animal species and their habitats, particularly those inhabiting extreme regions (arid and semiarid lands, Antarctic, …).

Population management of threatened species, either in captivity (e.g., gazelles) or in wild (e.g., bats), is an activity also covered by our group, attending, thereby, those demands from local, regional, national and international agencies.

  • Behavioural ecology.- Animal behaviour may be defined as the set of optimum decisions emerging from natural selection in response to a series of ecological factors that limit their survival and reproduction. This research line studies how the behaviour of an individual influences and is influenced by, its relations with other individuals whether or not of the same species.

  • Parasitemies in endangered ungulates.- We develop methods for seroevaluation, preventive strategies, profilaxis and parasite control in several species of endangered ungulates housed at the Rescue Park of Saharan Fauna: Gazella cuvieri, Gazella dama mhorr, Gazella dorcas and Ammotragus lervia.

  • Management of captive populations.- The management and captive breeding of all those species whose populations in the wild have been drastically reduced as a consequence of the human activities on their habitats, is the only hope for their survival. For Gazella dama mhorr and for Gazella cuvieri, we coordinate, at international level, their Captive Breeding Programmes, based on biological principles, demographically effective, in order to reach the population size needed to re-establish viable populations in their distribution range of Northern Africa.
